China's Biggest Electric Bike Producer Niu Records for $150 Million IPO in the US

Electric motorcycles and scooters are plug-in electric vehicles with two or three wheels powered by electricity. The electricity is stored on board in a rechargeable battery, which drives one or more electric motors. Electric scooters (as distinct from motorcycles) have a step-through frame.

The early history of electric bikes is to some degree hazy. In 1895, a patent application for an "electrical bike" was documented by Ogden Bolton Jr. of Canton Ohio. The second was recorded by Hosea W. Libbey of Boston.

While electric scooters (Vesta-style, not Razor-style) are not very widespread yet in the US, they are picking up pace for mode of transport. This is largely due to environmental issues, easy to use and unreasonably costly.


Niu, the self proclaimed “largest lithium-ion battery-powered e-scooter organization in China" has now made one more stride towards developing their electric bike realm by petitioning for an IPO in the US. The generally new Chinese organization, established in 2014, is planning to raise $150M through  an initial public offering in the US. The documenting is being made under the image Niu.
Niu’s success isn't unnoticed, with the company's revenue increasing from $52 million in 2016 to $112 million in 2017. In the first half of 2018, the company has already earned $81 million in revenue.

Apart from this, the company recently revealed their plans to introduce two new electric scooter models into the European market as well. Niu is aggressively targeting Europe with its new electric scooters, focusing on young, stylish consumers that contribute majorly towards growing electric scooter market. It has a wide variety of new scooters built for these market, including 30 mph models meant to compete with 50cc scooters and 44 mph models that are closer to 125cc scooter specs. Niu’s prices in Europe are higher than their prices in China, though their European models include higher-end components such as Bosch motors. Prices for Niu scooters in Europe range from approximately $2,700 to $5,300, depending on their model. The company has not yet announced plans to offer their electric scooters for sale in the US, though an IPO in the US is a good first step.

Europe has been reliably driving the US in electric vehicle reception patterns for as long as couple of years. While electric scooter sales aren’t as high in the US, Americans have already begun embracing electric mopeds and scooters in rental programs found in cities such as San Francisco, NYC and Pittsburgh. And with the success of electric kick-scooter companies like Bird and Lime, Americans are sooner going to realize that it’s more comfortable to sit down than to stand up.

Havells India to double the revenue by 2020.
